Working with Surveyors of all ages I spend a large proportion of my time talking to people about their experiences, both in the workplace and at job interviews.
Everyone is aware of age discrimination laws as part of the Equality Act 2010 and for most people it appears to be the older job seeker that comes to mind when someone mentions age discrimination, however, recently I have seen the other side of the coin.
We’re only 3 months into the year but I have already heard of talented young Quantity Surveyors and Building Surveyors who have missed out on jobs that they are undoubtedly suitable for, solely because they are considered to be too young.
As a specialist recruiter, I am duty bound to ensure that no information is given which could lead to decisions being made based on age but recruiters cannot control what is said or done in an interview.
Looking back at the stories I have heard, it is my humble opinion that the people missing-out here are the employers, with the job seekers effectively dodging a bullet, in the form of a non forward thinking company. Employers are interviewing and turning down talented young individuals who through determination and hard work have sought to take on responsibilities that to some, belies their age. Having been in this situation myself MANY years ago, I love to meet and help these people find the perfect job, whilst also helping the employers to grow their businesses and move forward. I appreciate that with age comes experience and learning but if someone has worked hard to build this experience at a young age, I say snap them up.
Age is not a factor that should be considered when growing your team. Skills and experience along with personality and ‘fit for culture’ are the factors that should affect your decision. Is a candidate the right fit for your business now and can you help develop them so that they can grow and strengthen your business? These are the questions that I would ask.
